Dandelions, more than an annoying weed

It’s early Sunday morning and I’m waiting for enough of the neighborhood to show signs of being awake so I can get out and mow the lawn before it gets too hot. As I reflect on the chore and other lawns on the block, it brings to mind a home about a block away with such a lush, well-manicured lawn that one couldn’t find a weed anywhere.
That made me remember a short article Joy sent for this week’s, “Your Healthy Tidbits.” It is all about the health promoting value of the dandelion. Far from being a nasty nuisance, the dandelion can be a great part of a salad!

The health benefits of the dandelion are many. One of the main benefits is it helps in maintaining bone health, skin care & weight loss. Dandelion is rich in calcium, which is essential for the growth & strength of bones, and it is rich in antioxidants like vitamin-C & Luteolin, which protect bones from age related damages due to free radicals, such as weakening & loss in bone density (Source: OrganicFacts.net). So perhaps next time we’re thinking about nuking the lawn, we might reconsider the value of that healthy little portion for our salad plate!
