Teacher Cadet Program Honored

On Wednesday Charlene and I attended the “Dick and Tunky Riley WhatWorksSC Award for Excellence” (in education) ceremony. The celebration was held in Columbia to present cash awards and trophies recognizing outstanding educational initiatives.
Richard Riley, U.S. Secretary of Education addressed the group via video to underscore the significance of the educational initiatives being recognized that afternoon.
Receiving top honors were Clemson University’s “Reading Recovery Training Center;” Furman University’s “Bridges to a Brighter Future;” and the “Teacher Cadet Program,” of the Center for Educator Recruitment, Retention, & Advancement (CERRA), located on the campus of Winthrop University. Charlene and her Program Director, Marcella Wine-Snyder (holding the big check in the photo) oversee the Teacher Cadet Program, which includes 170 South Carolina high schools and college partners throughout the state. This successful South Carolina program has become the model for 33 other states. For more information please visit: http://www.teachercadets.com
