Chiropractic, for a better life?

Seeing a large, colorful poster in the front room of a busy chiropractor’s office made an impression on me, so I thought I’d share it with you here.  It read, “Chiropractic, it’s not about your back; it’s not about your pain; it’s about your life!”  I knew that people often report feeling better after getting an adjustment,  but it turns out that feeling good was only the tip of the iceberg.  In fact when we adjust your spine, we’re not trying to change how you feel; instead we’re correcting a problem that interferes with the function of the body.  A precise adjustment corrects interference in the nerve system and that has implications to function throughout the body.  Here’s a great case in point.

The following excerpt from a letter documents the first chiropractic adjustment in history.  Written by Harvey Lillard (circa May, 1896),

Harvey Lillard, received first adjustment

it was later published as testimony of the case by Dr. D.D. Palmer in the January,1897 issue of his newsletter, “The Chiropractic.” Mr. Lillard didn’t have a back pain but when he received an adjustment he regained his hearing after 17 years of deafness!  Eight months after the September 18, 1895 adjustment he verified that he could still hear well after only two neck adjustments.

“I was deaf 17 years and I expected to always remain so, for I had doctored a great deal without any benefit. I had long ago made up my mind to not take any more ear treatments, for it did me no good.  Last January Dr. Palmer told me that my deafness came from an injury in my spine. This was new to me; but it is a fact that my back was injured at the time I went deaf. Dr. Palmer treated me on the spine; in two treatments I could hear quite well. That was eight months ago.  My hearing remains good. – HARVEY LILLARD, 320 W. Eleventh St., Davenport, Iowa”

So next time you visit your chiropractor, remember it’s about much more than how your feeling, it’s about your expression of life!  For more information about this interesting history, click: http://www.youneedchiro.com/joomla/publications (click on the 2nd article in the list of publications, “Old Dad Chiro, His Thoughts, Words and Deeds.”)
